1866 – In the United States, Dr. John Ellis first produced Valvoline brand oil. It was the world’s first patented motor oil.
Late 19th century – Valvoline became a major supplier of oil for railroad and industrial engines.

1950s – Widespread use in racing cars. Valvoline motor oils became the official sponsor of many auto sports teams in the United States.
1965 – First “Racing Oil” product was introduced to the market.

2000s – The company grew even more internationally, operating in hundreds of countries.
2016 – Valvoline becomes a publicly traded company with an IPO on the New York Stock Exchange.
2022 – The company split into two divisions:
Valvoline Global Products (oils, technical fluids and additives)
Valvoline Instant Oil Change (service station network).

The world's first motor oil was patented in 1873 by American doctor John Ellis. While studying the properties of crude oil for medical purposes, Ellis discovered that crude oil has good lubricating properties.
